Ruaha National Park, located in the heart of Tanzania, is the country’s largest national park and one of the biggest in Africa. Covering 20,226 sq km (7,809 sq miles), this vast wilderness is part of the greater Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, which spans an impressive 45,000 sq km. Its landscapes are diverse, from sweeping grasslands and rolling hills to rocky escarpments and mighty rivers that sustain an extraordinary array of wildlife.

The park is named after the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern border and acts as a lifeline for both animals and visitors seeking remarkable safari experiences. Seasonal rivers like the Njombe also cut through the park, carving dramatic gorges and providing habitats for crocodiles, hippos, and birdlife.

Wildlife Highlights

Ruaha is famous for its large elephant population—the biggest in Tanzania—and is also one of the few places where visitors can almost certainly spot the Greater Kudu, with its striking spiral horns. The park is home to a spectacular variety of wildlife, including:

Lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, and spotted hyenas
Buffalo, zebra, giraffes, warthogs, and sable antelope
Crocodiles and hippos along the riverbanks

Bird enthusiasts are in for a treat, as Ruaha hosts over 570 bird species, from vibrant bee-eaters and rollers to powerful raptors and the rare Eleonora’s Falcon, spotted between December and January.
