Saanane Island National Park
Located on a small island in Lake Victoria, just a short 15–20 minute boat ride from Mwanza, Saanane Island National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and accessible wildlife destinations. Covering just 2.2 square kilometers, it is the smallest national park in Tanzania — yet it offers a remarkable blend of adventure, wildlife, and scenic beauty right in the heart of the country’s second-largest city.
Named after its former owner, Mzee Saanane Chawandi, the island holds a fascinating history. It began as Tanzania’s first zoo in 1964, later transformed into a game reserve in 1991, and was officially gazetted as a National Park in 2013.
Despite its size, Saanane Island is teeming with life. Visitors can spot impalas, rock hyraxes, velvet monkeys, and wild cats, along with the rare De Brazza’s monkey — found nowhere else in Tanzania. The park’s reptile population includes monitor lizards, crocodiles, snakes (especially pythons), and the fascinating pancake and leopard tortoises.
The surrounding waters of Lake Victoria are rich in aquatic life such as tilapia and Nile perch, offering opportunities for scenic viewing and photography. For bird lovers, over 44 species have been recorded here, including seasonal migratory visitors that add color and charm throughout the year.
Saanane Island National Park is the perfect destination for a half-day or full-day trip from Mwanza — ideal for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a relaxing yet exciting break surrounded by wildlife and water.

Rubondo Island can be visited year-round, but the best time to go is during the dry season (June to October), when the trails are easier to explore and wildlife viewing is at its best.
The wet seasons (November to May) bring lush greenery and spectacular birdlife, making it perfect for birdwatchers and photographers.
Accessibility may be limited in some areas, but the landscapes are at their most scenic and the park is wonderfully quiet.
