Mikumi National Park

A Convenient Wilderness Close to Dar es Salaam

Mikumi National Park

Just a 3–4 hour drive from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations. It lies along the highway to Zambia and acts as a gateway to other southern circuit gems such as Udzungwa Mountains, Ruaha, and Kitulo National Parks.

The park’s defining feature is the expansive Mikumi floodplain, framed by mountain ranges on two sides. Open grasslands stretch endlessly across this plain, merging into miombo woodlands along the foothills, creating a rich variety of habitats for wildlife.

Wildlife & Safari Experience

Mikumi offers year-round wildlife sightings, making it ideal for those with limited time who still want a full safari experience.

  • On the plains: Expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, and giraffes. Giraffes are often spotted browsing acacia trees along the Mkata River, while elephants enjoy feeding on the fruits of tamarind trees.

  • In the woodlands: The miombo-covered hills shelter more elusive species like greater kudu, sable antelope, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.

  • Birdwatching: With over 400 recorded species, Mikumi is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Notable species include the lilac-breasted roller, bateleur eagle, marabou stork, guinea fowl, yellow-throated longclaw, and black-bellied bustard. During the rainy season, migratory birds from Europe, such as herons, plovers, cattle egrets, and fish eagles, can also be spotted.

Its diverse habitats and easy accessibility make Mikumi the perfect short safari destination—whether as a day trip or a stopover en route to Tanzania’s southern parks.
