Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Udzungwa Mountains Park

Udzungwa Mountains National Park, established in 1992, covers an area of 1,990 km², stretching across both the Morogoro Region (20%) and the Southern Highlands of Iringa (80%). The name Udzungwa originates from Wadsungwa, a sub-tribe of the Hehe people who once lived on the mountain slopes.

This park is often referred to as the “African Galápagos” due to its rich biodiversity and high level of endemic species. It is one of East Africa’s most unique conservation areas, boasting lush rainforests, rolling mountain ranges, miombo woodlands, grasslands, and scenic steppes.

The park’s greatest treasure is its biologically diverse forest, home to rare plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. From delicate African violets to towering 30-meter trees, the variety of flora is simply breathtaking.

Wildlife and Attractions

Udzungwa harbors a fascinating array of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, bushbucks, duikers, palm civets, hyenas, miombo genets, and the elusive elephant shrew. The park is also famous for its primates, particularly two species found only here:

  • Iringa Red Colobus

  • Sanje Crested Mangabey

For bird lovers, Udzungwa is a paradise with over 400 recorded bird species, such as crowned eagles, trumpeter hornbills, silvery-cheeked hornbills, woodland kingfishers, and malachite kingfishers.

One of the park’s highlights is the Sanje Waterfalls, dropping 170 meters into the forest, offering breathtaking views and refreshing pools for hikers.
