Rubondo Island National Park

Tanzania’s Hidden Island Paradise

Rubondo Island National Park

Nestled in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, Rubondo Island National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and untouched wildlife sanctuaries. Covering 240 km², it is one of only two national parks in the country located entirely on an island. Established as a game reserve in 1965 and later declared a national park in 1977, Rubondo serves as a safe haven for wildlife and a paradise for nature lovers seeking a remote, off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Over 90% of the island remains covered in lush forest, creating a sanctuary where wildlife thrives in peace. The park also includes nine smaller islands, which protect vital fish breeding grounds and contribute to Lake Victoria’s ecological balance.

Rubondo’s landscape is a fascinating mix of evergreen and semi-deciduous forest, sandy beaches, rocky shores, and papyrus swamps lined with elegant date palms. This rich habitat supports a variety of wildlife — including elephants, giraffes, bushbucks, hippos, crocodiles, and even a small group of chimpanzees, introduced as part of a successful conservation project.

Beyond wildlife viewing, visitors can enjoy boating safaris, birdwatching, fishing, nature walks, and kayaking, all while immersed in the tranquility of Africa’s largest lake.

The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 300 species recorded. From African fish eagles and pied kingfishers to African grey parrots and egrets, the island offers endless opportunities for bird photography and exploration.

Best time To Go

Discover optimal safari timing with our seasonal guide for prime wildlife sightings and unforgettable experiences

Rubondo Island can be visited year-round, but the best time to go is during the dry season (June to October), when the trails are easier to explore and wildlife viewing is at its best.

The wet seasons (November to May) bring lush greenery and spectacular birdlife, making it perfect for birdwatchers and photographers.

Accessibility may be limited in some areas, but the landscapes are at their most scenic and the park is wonderfully quiet.
